Crybaby wah refinish

Post by NippleWrestler »

My crybaby was looking tired and worn out, the black had faded to an ashy grey and generally looked a bit flat.

I modded the wah previously - true bypass, an indicator LED, some circuit mods to make it less piercing.

The final step was to refinish the thing.

If you want to do this yourself they're fairly simple to take apart but a hammer comes in very handy.

It's all obvious except for removing the treadle: to do this you have to whack out the pin on which the treadle pivots. You need to whack it out from the side. If you look at the pin you'll see one side of the pin is thicker than the other. Whack it out from the smaller side. The other side is knurled so you won't get very far. I used a long square drill bit and a hammer. 10 good whacks and I was able to pull it out from the other side. Then you have the 2 pieces - the bottom shell and the treadle.

Clean the enclosures of crud/oil/gunk. I literally put them in the sink with some hot soapy water and dried them off with a towel and then scuffed the old paint with some 80 grit so the new stuff could adhere to something.

Tape up what you don't want sprayed. Spray the rest.

It looks like this now:

Cool stuff.

Looks cool. Is that the Rustoleum stuff? I painted a pedal with that a while ago, and it came out great.

Yeah it is. Just the hammered finish copper stuff. A mate of mine finished his coffee machine (looks ridiculously cool) in it which got me thinking.

This was my effort. Went with a small enamel pin (sans pin) for a bit of added pizzazz.

Love a bit of hammerite, been using it for over 40 years (sadly)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.
