Be original I say. Or at the very least push the design evaluation forward on what's already out there by putting your own twist on things.

I’m seeing how far I can push the tone shaping of a basic single transistor overdrive, I’m getting pretty close to something I’m happy with. I’ve gone with a germanium transistor and it does sound smooth for sure. I find the single transistor drives really responsive but a little ratty sounding (which is cool in its own way) like an exploding small amp type thing. I think from
My experiments it’s possible to smooth things out and keep the immediacy of the attack. Trying to make it as simple as possible but still great sounding. It might look something like this.
