Getting high balled you mean? One dude was on there saying it was a $30K instrument. I only low balled them after the auction closed.vintage52 wrote:Is that the one that was on TM many moons ago where the lady selling was getting low balled etc etc?GrantB wrote:I was looking at my old project photo's....dang this turned out good.
Actually, it was a fair price. Handed the cash over on 11th April 2011. The original owner would have been 71 years old had he been alive. Got it for his 21st birthday in 1961.
I need to put the photos of the resto work back up. What a journey!

Re: Mickey Mouse is in the House (vintage guitar happy ending)
Given the resto work involved, this guitar could only ever be worth the sum of its parts. Thankfully, I am not over invested.
Originally it was $5K no reserve, and I started bidding up to $5.7K before it was pulled because some clever guitarey people "in the know" said it was worth moon beams. I don't like those people...they upset buyers and sellers.
I did a first inspection and got excited when I confirmed the original PAFs and harness was untouched. Made an offer. Then it went back on TM at some high price and never sold ($30K?). I stayed in touch with the grand daughter, and almost a year later we came to an arrangement.

Unfortunately, the uniformed so called "experts", do tend to distort the market. Especially so when they work in music retail, where there is an implied "expertise" not just in value but as to condition.....GrantB wrote:Given the resto work involved, this guitar could only ever be worth the sum of its parts. It’s interesting, the people quoting the “the higher than market” values never seem to have the cash to stump up and prove their assumption!

Yeah, what’s the odd route, extra hardware and a bit of new paint got to do with “originality”?!Bigdaddy wrote:GrantB wrote:

I'm back to the UK for a few weeks in April, will have to get a few shots of my Dad's beloved 1977 Gibson ES355. Will be interesting to see if my memories of it have served me well
