Jimmy Herring Tyler

Post by Dharmajester »

I'm sure many of you are familiar with this guitar from when Kiwiaxe was selling it.

I was never happy with it in a Strat configuration, sounded stratish but something was lacking. Acoustically it had a weird resonance which was down to the internal cavity interacting with the scratchplate. Remove the plate altogether and it sounded great but hardly practicle.
Thought it might be cool as a Jimmy Herring 2 humbucker 2 vol 1 tone axe so grabbed an HH scratchplate and popped a pair of low wind Ox4's in it.
Was ok, rather like an SG but the cavity resonance was still present ( unless through a cranked amp ).
Decided I'd try some Harmonic Design Z90's which have saved every guitar I've ever put them in. Loooong wait, ordered in Nov, came last week.
But boy was it worth it. It now has single coil clarity but with the heft of humbuckers and cranked it absolutely screams. Also the physical bulk of the Z90's has countered much of the cavity resonance, so major result.
I keep going in my music room and cranking it through some amps to see if I've been deluding myself and each time i come out grinning.
Got Haramis hardware in NY to knock out some tort knobs to match.

Shit, that does look cool!

Excellent outcome, and solid logic in the changes.

That really is a great look.

Cavity resonance; could you not pack it with a piece of hard foam or something?

Indeed, and something I considered but the concept of adding material that might impact sustain sent me into a spiral of procrastination, yeah nah, yeah nah, etc etc..

I find my own cavity resonance overwhelming sometimes, especially with the natural reverb of our ensuite.

Man, this is such a wild tone journey — love the persistence! Z90s really are magic in the right guitar. That mix of single coil snap with humbucker punch is hard to beat. Also, tort knobs? Total class move🔥
