Resonator advice
Hey
I’m keen to challenge myself and learn something a bit outside of my normal style. I’ve been thinking I’d like to learn a bit of slide guitar… resonator style.
Like this sort of thing: https://youtu.be/h2YGMdGJOF4?si=4o9GxeR08rMHiS2w
So. Firstly I know nothing about resonators, so am keen on any advice around what would be good to get my hands on.
Second, if anyone has good examples of other songs for inspiration or videos for learning etc, please share!

Re: Resonator advice
Justin Johnson does a lot of that on his YT channel. Definitely check it out.
If you're interested I have a single cone metal body (chrome plated) resonator that I got from Laurie (k1w1). It came in an excellent case. I'm looking to move it on. Since I got it from Laurie for $300 then I gotta pass it on in the forum for that. plus shipping of course.
It is loud!
It's a Style O 14 fret brass single cone with upgraded biscuit and saddle as well as tuners. (Laurie's description).
I might look at a wood-bodied one in the future.

Re: Resonator advice
Square neck vs round neck is probably your first choice. Square neck is for if you are fully committed to only playing slide, cos it will be impossibly fat.sopachrga wrote: ↑Sat Mar 08, 2025 1:43 pm Hey

Then wood vs metal body. If you choose metal, brass is best, and most favoured I think (but of course, nickel or chrome plated). If you choose wood, I'd go with mahogany.
Then you can choose 12 fret or 14. 12 fret is more traditional, 14 is more practical.

Re: Resonator advice
That one Keith got off me is a really good player. I had upgraded all the important parts. Well worth the money, you likely won't find better anywhere else in NZ without importing one.
I have 3, 2 Republic single cones, wood and steel body and a brass body tricone. Brass is a smoother sound, steel is brasher.
ETA When you change strings change them one at a time so the cone doesn't move. Don't cut them all off at once.

The one that Sopachrga just bought is the first one in that JB, it was branded Artiste which is a banjo shop in Napier, they were bringing them in 10 years back. The engraving is pretty nice.

Re: Resonator advice
I wonder why they all seem to have that metal strip over the bridge. Makes palm-muting difficult.

Re: Resonator advice
Yeah, mine has that. Played as intended it's not an issue but I palm mute all the time and it's a pain.
Don't talk to me about failure; sometimes I even fail to disappoint myself.
