Is there a business in NZ that finishes guitars in nitro lacquer?
I don't have the space, like a backyard or shed, and experience to do it myself. Just wondering if there is anyone in NZ who can do a really good job finishing a strat body in the colour of my choice. I gather there is a business in Auckland that can prepare nitro in aerosol cans based on colour choice from a Resene chart.
Just curious at this stage. There are operators in the US who can do this service, but some of them, like MJT finishes, don't look that appealing to me. Not into reliced guitars, and I don't like the colour quality of MJT finishes either; much prefer the aged/closet classic appearance with similar colour quality to Fender's custom shop guitars.
thanks

Check with Andries at The Fret Shop. I know he has a spray booth, not sure on the nitro.

Whereabouts are you? There's a furniture finishing bunch in CHC who can do nitro finishes.Spazzatura wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 10:57 am I don't have the space, like a backyard or shed, and experience to do it myself. Nitro changes the specific gravity of the body it is sprayed on. They become very heavy apparentlyMikeC wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 12:09 pmHe does nitro & does a good job too. Adrian refinned my P Bass in nitro a few years ago and to me the old beast turned out lighter that it used to be. Of course that could be the 57 year old Ash wood drying out ...
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Re: Is there a business in NZ that finishes guitars in nitro lacquer?
A thin nitro finish is virtually weightless once it's dry. I have a few test pieces to spray, and I'll weigh before and after to get a g/m3 measurement. I suspect most of the weight will come grain filler and the high-compound nitro sanding sealer that I use.
