Thanks for the tip. I think ill have to shelve the 335 dream till custom shop money / international trip is on the radar to actually test a range of them in one place.

No need for me to tell you this, but anyway, do a lot of hunting around on the web.
Last new customshop 335s I saw here in NZ were at Akld Rockshop, an '18 Memphis in 2019 priced at $8k and earlier this year a '23 for $13k.
All the best with the quest.
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

In a rare case of disagreement between goldtop0 and I, my experience suggests many of the standard production 335s over the last 30 years have been excellent, more or less. Often the CS 335s are the same base guitar but with different period fitments.
But, each guitar on its merit.
You should be able to get a great 335 for 4K imo.

Agree with this - the neck profiles alone vary model to model sometimes by a huge amount. I bought 3 in a 9 month window before landing with the one I’ve kept for 8 years. Other 2 that went back out the door were great instruments, but one required Andre the Giant’s left hand, and the other I think the tuners disliked equilibrium…dot 60s cherry turned out to be everything I was after.olegmcnoleg wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2024 8:40 amIndeed, that's my experience too--there is so little consistency. With 335s and 339s, you need to try before you buy.Dharmajester wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 7:35 pm 335's are in my tediously long experience the most variable popular guitar in the Gibson range. Buying a Custom Shop produced model would hopefully reduce the possibility of taking home a lemon. Another consideration is spec. CS models have a far wider selection of neck profiles, so if you like a nice chunky neck CS is your only option.
A definite try before you buy instrument nonetheless.
