Remove and Replacing a Fretboard

Post by dayl »

Hey guys,

I have an old RG550 that needs a new FB and really doesn't quite warrant the cost of getting professional help.

So.... have any of you done this? What were the pros, cons and lessons.

I've seen a few vids and have the iron ready. It's had the frets taken out also.

So ease post advice and / or and material that helped along the way.

Cheers

Most important tool is a paint scraper, spatula type thing, with a smoothly ground sharp end. You can heat those up with a paint removal gun and push into the seam...

It's not fun, but entirely doable.

And put some leather gloves on...
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Is it an original wizard neck? They're quite thin so I'd be worried about warping the neck, or weakening the scarf joint when applying heat.

But maybe it's a non issue!

I put a Zebrawood fretboard on a RG7620 neck, so it is possible
If you don't have the tools required it might be cheaper to pay someone or find a replacement neck

Great work mate. Both those options are well over budget. It would suck bigtime, but wont be the end of the world if it dies.

Patience is required to get the glue nice and soft before using the spatula, otherwise you can damage the neck wood, which means more work to tidy up. Does the board need to come off? Can't repair it?

No zebras were harmed in the making of this fretboard? Like the monkey grip! Any finished pics?
