Or cut the tang back a little, install, and then as you say fill the slot with dust and CA etc.

Jay wrote: Tue Jul 26, 2022 4:31 pm Nothing wrong with brown ebony, they used to let them rot when they found the tree wasn't black enough...

But why would you stain it?

I have have some pitch black ebony which is more than 60 years old. Will be used for some special builds. I also have some streaky ebony which I bought a few years ago and that is also very nice.

Imo staining is just yearning back to yesteryear... ymmv
I just like the look of a nice dark rosewood (or ebony in this case) fretboard. It's my custom build so I can call the shots!
Yep, you're the boss and you get what you want! Looking good!

Shaping and sanding almost done. Serial no. and logo inserted - a nice touch that I wanted and especially good if they become desirable! Start off as you mean to go on I say :D

Body sanded and primed with 2 coats. Will be flat block sanded and if it doesn't go through to wood will be dried for a couple more days. Then the colour (vintage blonde) and then the clear coat.

He's using a lacquer from PPG and I'm gonna find out what it actually is. Thanks for raising it because I do want nitrocellulose lacquer for the way it ages.

PPG do nitro. They call it SpeedLac or 262.

Yes he is - the product is PPG Speedlac 262 nitrocellulose lacquer (thanks Rob for naming it). But it caused me to briefly stare into the rabbit hole of old verses modern nitro and I'm staying clear of that one...

I haven't sprayed it with enough skill to speak authoritatively. But my experience is that is feel a lot more like old nitro than what Gibson are spraying on their non-Custom Shop instruments. It's super soft and wears very quickly. Doesn't have the plasticky feel. I haven't had it crack with temperature changes yet (not that I've tried deliberately) but I suspect that's to do with my poor technique.

Where did you end up buying it from? My google skills are letting me down to try and find a supplier....

Andries already had it in stock and it was always what he was using. I think he got it from an NZ supplier. The brand is "PPG" - try Googling/contacting that way. I wasn't able to find out anything via Google on the actual product "Speedlac 262 nitrocellulose lacquer". Maybe if you talked to them directly.
