It is nonsensical.
Well the previous limit was around 400, because it wasn't worth customs time to collect GST when the amount was less than 50$.

Everything should have GST added, it's just impractical to collect on every package, or to expect every overseas retailer to adhere to our foreign arrangements.

The current system is about maximising the coverage for the least amount of effort. Most products that are imported into NZ come through the same few huge retailers - Amazon, Alibaba, Ebay, ASOS, etc. By having those big companies collect the GST at the point of sale, you get the most coverage. It isn't worth customs chasing up every little item from smaller companies.

You need to accept that you will be charged GST. If the seller doesn't charge you GST at point of sale due to under 60k then you've clicked.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

It’s pretty simple they are betting on most retailers charging gst will well and truly offset the ones who don’t, leaving them in a net win over the old method of collection.

Packages over $1k are less common and therefore easier to police.

Bingo.

So instead of teasing people by saying items under $1k do not have GST applied, then create a system so they most often are, just get rid of stating items under $1k do not attract GST. FFS is it tht hard to be honest?

From the website.

"GST of 15% applies to all imported items, including anything you bought online or using a mail order catalogue. Overseas suppliers may charge GST on items sent to New Zealand consumers that are valued at NZ$1000 or less."

No teasing.

If you get a supplier who doesn't apply it at source, then its a win. Just accept you need to pay gst and if they don't apply it then you've clicked. else buy in nz and still pay gst.

I'm really not sure how IRD would know how much is being spent at overseas retailers.

It's also a cost vs benefit thing for customs. The cost of collecting on all the small purchases would outweigh the revenue, but the admin of keeping track of a few large overseas sellers is much less.

Is there any loophole of creating a business in which each order (including shipping) is $1k or less but your total orders per year doesn't exceed $60k?

No loophole, you’re not required to charge gst in that instance :-)

Maybe we can all chip in on NZ guitars starting a business like this then? Any excess guitar gear We can flip on TradeMe and use the net profit for forum donations?
