What do you guys consider as "heavy" strat??

Post by johnstratiwant »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what you guys consider as "heavy" strat?

I had a strat that was around 3.8kg (8.375Ibs) which I found to be bit heavy. Had incredible sustain but not sure if that's due to the weight or just that wood of the guitar. Based on other Strat forums, most people agree that most ideal weight are between 7.5-8Ibs (everything in Ibs in America )

Do you think there is much difference in 7.9Ibs vs 8.375Ibs (that's only 200g difference).

Maybe be an odd post but just curious what other fellow strat owners think

Cheers

I have a pretty heavy strat, its a mahogany bodied strat, I made the body from a 2 piece centre joined piece of mahogany. It has a side adjusting warmoth neck on it.
And it weighs about one metric fucktonne. I'll get the scales out later - its heavier than my current LP.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I've found it doesn't take much extra weight for a guitar to feel heavy. I have a strat that feels "heavy" to me which is around 3.8kg and a lighter strat that's around 3.4kg.

The 3.8kg was my main gigging guitar and didn't give me any issues, but I had a Les Paul that was around 4.5kg that was a really struggle to play standing for long periods (but I'm not very big!).

There is a myth that somehow lighter Strats and Teles sound better. You don’t need to buy into it. (The really light ones are often swamp ash, not alder.)

If you have found a Strat that works for you and is still comfortable, then I say stick with it.

I built a strat from merbau (type of kwila) floorboards and kanuka neck. It weighs in at just under 6kg.

It is so heavy that you can only play Lay down Sally, when you are sitting with support cushions around you.

It needs a full scale operation to hollow the body out and get it to shed 2kgs.
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

you should only be playing that in a sound proof room with padded walls anyway.

Heavy for practice can be different to Heavy for Gig

A Heavy Instrument may “Balance” better.

IMO it’s not credible to decide if weight determines the tonal value of the instrument. Weight is considered for other reasons.

Just, ever so briefly, think it was written and sung by George Michael. You would have loved it.... Especially if he was dressed in all white wham gear :D

I prefer the operation. Can you throw a few scalpels my way?

^This!

Just weighed my strat... 1990s, USA, Alder... 3.95kg! Didnt used to feel that heavy in the 90s! 😆. Promised myself a LP once the degree is finished. I'll be looking <=4kg.

Compare with SE soapbar at 3.01kg... Absolute delight to play

My LP is bang on 4kg. I wonder if the strap helps too, I have a thick leather strap that holds it fairly stable on my shoulder. My "heavy" strat has a cheaper strap and slips and slides around a bit.
