Help me put a price on this

Post by ChAoZ »

I'm good at making guitars,
I'm not good at putting a price for things,
So please help with a valuation on my SG style, specs below
All African timbers,
1 piece Paduak body - 44mm
5 piece Bubinga & Sapele neck, BSBSB - chunky profile
Zebrawood fretboard with Jescar Evo gold jumbo frets
Gibson tuners
Artisan Guitar Electronics '57 Humbucker
Tru-Oil finish
SG style that weighs as much as a good LP

Usual formula for pricing of manufactured product would be something like this :

Materials cost x 1.5 plus Labour cost plus Margin.

Your material cost and labour cost are pretty much set in stone so its really just your Margin you are playing with.

Our best guitar maker on this forum (Adrian) couldn't make a decent living out of building guitars so changed careers. If you are totally honest with yourself, you add up all material costs. Keep track of all hours minus the farting around ones and use the living wage to calculate labour cost. If you can't sell it for both costs added up, then you need to accept that you are indulging in a loss making hobby from an financial point of view. The creation process itself is your reward and its benefits cannot be expressed in dollar terms. So there!

Edit - it is better to build on commission if you can, but you know all that :D

Yep, sad world. We should go back to the sixties when guitars could not be imported, only parts I believe. That would be good for the NZ guitar builders?

I think I'll write to my local MP with this great idea how to re-kickstart our economy.

do you have a play through video? or sound sample type thinggy?
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.
