Woefully inadequate it seems.

Where does one even purchase this? The only place I even saw a billboard for it was outside of Dargaville

High gain amp with a tube screamer into the front, gain on zero, giver some level. Palm muting is all about position, you need to move your hand back and forth to find the sweet spot, I rest the part of my hand nearest the wrist on the bridge and go from there :)

I've got my Gibson scale ESP setup to C standard with 11-52, feels good. JB/59 pickups. You're using modelling now right? I find the 5150 or Engl models to be the best for chug.
Loving it so far

I concur. 11-52 gauge strings and a 5150 style amp with an overdrive infront is a good starting point.

A tight noise gate helps too.

Woodstock bourbon and cola premixes work just as well I hear, as long as you call them woodies.

Note that in the vid you posted, they're using quite low pre-amp gain settings, so maybe not boosting with a pedal.

But the modern high gain market is saturated with amps and manufacturers, I'd suggest watch loads of Ola Englund vids and start picking out gear you like the sound of.

I've got 10-56's on my SG and PRS. Former gets tuned to Drop C occasionally, the latter there by default.
Practise chugs by just open string palm muting i.e. right hand workout (cue JB :D ) to get that down before you start with the left hand fretting.
Noise gate is your pal as Nik mentions.
Use high gain but then back off to about 50-70% of available gain, and boost the rest with a TS9 style all-level/little gain style front end kick.

Fascinating thread, I’m totally ignorant of this kind of playing. C is very low indeed Do you need to take the action up to accommodate the wider string vibration?

No, a well set up guitar tuned to C standard or dropped C, with the appropriate string gauge (I use 12-56s for C standard), will play and feel much like a guitar tuned to E standard with 10s on it.

I had my BC Rich Gunslinger set up for C standard in the UK by Gary Moore's old live/touring guitar tech, it was beautiful to play with nice, low action.

One thing to be aware of is that modern metal requires tight, precise playing and lots of control over your picking hand and respective technique, you're not smashing out big chords or really digging into the guitar as you might with high energy blues or rock.

It's one of the reasons why amp review vids are often great right up until when the guitarist tries to demo the high gain metal settings, playing metal is a specific set of skills you don't develop by playing rock, blues, country etc.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Drop C is effectively the E standard of metal these days. 8)
