Christchurch guitar setup recommendations?

Post by Shimmer »

Any recommendations for an electric guitar setup in Christchurch? I took mine to an often recommended guy, and he fixed some issues with pickup selector and refretted a few frets which was great!
But the action is too high and it frets out esp above the 12th. (i.e. fretting on the 14th makes contact with the 15th - i dont really play much up at those lofty altitudes, but would ideally prefer that not to happen!)
I'm not wanting to give bad press, but rather interested in hearing who else might be worth considering.
Cheers!
P.S. Do the stores do it themselves? Or ship them out to various people?
I want all the pedals!

Alan Farrow. Think he does setups for most of the shops in Christchurch.

Have you spoken to the tech who did the work? Maybe he was unaware of the issue/slipped his mind etc and would happily fix it up for you if he was made aware. To play devil's advocate, did you ask for a set up or just for the new switch and frets? One would assume that a set up would be part of the quote/price, but......
I always try to resolve an issue before I go looking elsewhere. Good luck.

The setup was what i asked for - but you're right - I may not have been specific enough either. Thanks!
I want all the pedals!

Alan Farrow does most of the work for Rockshop and Music planet, think Music works might have an in-house tech but it depends on there staff at the time.
Peter Stephen in Littleton is a top luthier but can be a long turn around time and more expensive.
There must be others but those are the 2 I know about.

I would discuss it with Alan first. He's very approachable based on my experiences with him

I've always had great setups from Alan, I'm pretty specific about what I want though and basically say do whatever it takes to achieve it, fret levelling / whatever :)
Just keep me where the light is

Alan is definitely the man. Is this a new guitar that you've just purchased? Could be an issue with fall away at the top end if its a bolt on. If its really old there can be an issue with isolated bowing at that 14/15 fret point. I think Grant B discussed it in a post somewhere......

Thanks all - great advice. - In hindsight, I wasn't specific enough when I first took it in, so will go back and I'm sure the outcome will be great.
(It is an older 90s era Ibanez Talman - bolt on neck. So potentially a few issues.)
I want all the pedals!

Let us know how you get on,its the one thing really missing here in chch IMHO!

Reviving this thread. Apparently Alan Farrow is shutting up shop.

Anyone got any new contacts for bass or guitar setup in CHCH?

Bugger! I knew that would happen at some stage soon, but it still feels sooner than expected.

I've seen the name Jason Herbert pop up around FB for a wee while. I think he is a relatively recent migrant to CHC, but I could be wrong on that. I haven't actually needed a tech myself. Would be keen to hear if there are any feedback on the guy and his work.

Wonder if he's on the forum...

I’ve used Jason Herbert recently for a full refret and he did a good job, perhaps not perfect but as good as Alan I’d say.
He’s still learning but has invested a lot in the proper tools and
Seems like he’s settling into CHCH for the long run so will be around a while.
