A special NGD to end the year

Post by slash-ed »

It's been awhile since I've posted a NGD here!

As you all know, in 2018 I ditched my job in engineering and went to work for Roland/BOSS. Initially as you might expect, such a big change in life heading was not without internal doubts. However, just under 3 years down the track, I've become pretty confident in my ability to do this job (in fact I've actually been promoted twice), while my old job unfortunately has suffered large scale redundancies due to the state of the aviation industry in the Covid era. Not that I necessarily believe in such things but it does seem like some sort of cosmic validation of my life choices... and so I set out to buy something really cool because any excuse works really

So here it is - the Suhr Ian Thornley signature Classic S in super-relic "Roughneck" finish. I'm a huge Ian Thornley/Big Wreck fan (if you haven't, check them out) and I remember being blown away by this at NAMM. As I get older my tastes have definitely gone more conservative, and what I really love about this guitar is that it looks like a reliced SRV vibe Strat, but it's packed with modern specs like stainless steel frets, roasted maple neck, high output humbuckers and advanced switching (5-way, middle position does both humbuckers, and both tone knobs are push-push for series/parallel). It's got a big fuck off soft V neck profile on it, and sort of plays like a Les Paul in a Strat body.

Relicing of course is always a polarising topic and I myself never used to get it, but I've grown to really love the idea when it's executed well - and it sure is executed well here!

TLDR - I got a new guitar, I love it. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all the NZG crew and here's hoping for a slightly more normal 2021!

Ack, sorry for broken links, this should work:

Good to hear the job's going well man. I was pretty tempted to apply for the one you guys had going a few months ago but still got a 14 year old spending time between me and her mum so not the right time to be leaving the country. Not to mention the slight issue of having a music store to run! But it must be pretty cool. Congrats on the guitar!

That finish reminds of an old Telecaster I once relic'd.... :winky:
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
