Fretboard radius

Post by werdna »

Learn me please.

I have a tele with quite a round fretboard radius and modern C neck profile.

I have a tele with quite a flat fretboard radius and a Wolfgang assymetrical neck profile.

Both feel quite different yet I don't know which I like better.

What are the advantages on paper of the two approaches.

I always find that "round" is more comfortable especially when play chords and "flat" makes the neck feel "faster". Flat also gives me a little more hand fatigue when playing chords. I still prefer Flat though

Pretty much the perfect neck for me seems to be the one on the guitar I like playing the most

Entirely personal and maybe even depends on other factors like body shape and scale (in terms of the overall comfort for that particular guitar).

I like the big 50s' with a slight v carve, and a 7.25" radius on a 25.5" scale neck. I find vibrato easier when I can roll the side of my index finger on that raised v.

On a Les Paul I don't like a 60s' slim at all. Much prefer the nice rounded shapes associated with '58 and '59.

This is why compound radius fingerboards exist. You get flat at the top and rounder near the nut. I prefer a 12" for regular usage. Easier playability than a smaller radius, but fretwire and profile have a lot to do with the equation.

My acoustic had a 16-21" compound and it's fantastic, it feels like a classical past the 12th if you're into that sorta thing.

As much as i like the 12" radius on my sg, I seem to keep going back to the compound 10-16" on the tele and strat, prob because they have fatter necks over the sg. I dont mind the 9.5' on the Telemaster even thought the neck is a bit thinner, though on this i do have issues with the fret ends over the others..
