Looking at this thread and wondering how to casually drop it in front of my wife...

Seriously though, have you guys with the big collections of high value instruments done a tally to figure out what your collection is worth? If for no other reason than insurance?

I keep a .pdf on a few memory sticks with all my gear listed, with pics and a rough valuation. Partly for insurance but also to aid my family in the event of me succumbing to an end of life incident. :shh:

Don't think I qualify as a big collection, but everything worth more than a grand is specified on the insurance policy.

Also, for me it represents 25 years of accumulation, so the cost per year isn't massive.

In the context of hobbies playing guitar isn't really that expensive. Put your guitar rig up against the costs of having a track day car, a boat, fishing, mountain biking, motorbiking, skiing/snowboarding, dive gear. Even a high spec gaming PC and an online game subscription could set you back more, and compared to those your upkeep / maintenance costs are negligible - strings, some gas to drive to jams and gearfests.

Some guys I used to work with who had a part share in a boat could spend more than the cost of a Katana just filling the thing with gas.

I have main guitars listed but I note I need to go through it again as I’ve sold and bought so many in between.

Um...and I bought it...$900 was a stretch but I look at it as an investment.
