I think it was missing for 20+ years but he's got it back now.

Did some googling. Frampton has his one back, it was a 54' custom that was modded to look like a '57 (3-humbuckers). The red one is from '60.

Has anyone ever really played a Les Paul Standard and thought "nope, needs another humbucker in the middle of nowhere"?

Had one. Loved the look, didn't know what to do with the 3rd humbucker. Even worse, when I considered pickup change, that 3rd one is just a bit of an annoying hanger-on.

I like that. Except it's red and has two too many pickups.

I'm a tolerant man, I could live with the red.

I really like it also. Apparently the three pickup thing is not good though for playing “in the moment” -One always has to be aware of where the pick is. I had a three pickup Firebird (2 actually) that had three pups and it was a pain.

I know all about picks bouncing off pickups  The lack of this characteristic is an endearing aspect of Teles and Juniors.

My Epiphone Riviera as received from the factory, has the middle pickup set lower than the others to alleviate this issue. I also tend to use the middle pickup volume control more as a tone control by blending the volume with the others - it can take out some of the potential ice pickiness of the bridge pickup or mellow out the neck pickup. Other times the middle volume is backed right off giving a brighter overall sound. I like the 3 pickup setup for its versatility.

Single P90 and a Boss GE-7. Job done. :D
