Mannix guitars????

Post by Emir »

I was browsing through trademe tonight and I saw alot of these, but can't find any information about them.

What are they like? Does the cheap price reflect on the quality?

Just curious :D

Thanks, I wasn't actually looking for a cheaper guitar. I just happen to see a body shape I liked and had a quick thought about modding one somewhat with new pick ups etc. depending on what the quality was like.

You'd end up wanting to replace the tuners and nut and bridge and other hardware too ;)

The 26 pieces are made in Mongolia by unskilled chimpanzees then sent to China for assembly by 8 month old children in kindergartens.

I have a Mannix tele (gasp!) that I picked up off TM for $80.00. I actually play it a lot more than I thought I would - it's not great, or even good for that matter, but it's definitely better than you would expect for the price. It's ridiculously light, the paint is very thin, it has very low-output pickups, the nut is shit... I could go on, but you get the picture - it's a typical budget guitar. I was getting some decent tones out of it with my TS808 clone through my HR Deluxe, but tried it with a Hot Cake and was blown away - really good note clarity and fantastic crunch. If you have a solid state 10 watt combo don't bother, but with a decent amp it's a pass mark.

My brother has the teardrop copy of theirs that he's turned into a Frankenstein with American Strat pickups from the parts bin. Goes pretty good.

I'm no gear snob and am a sucker for punishment when it comes to the cheap and cheerful. I'd say get one as they are so cheap you could hack it up for firewood...

So what happens to Mannix guitars after they've outlived their usefulness?

I notice there's heaps of them on TM, but they are all new and sold by the same guys in AKL. I've never noticed any 2nd hand ones.

Bodies get sawn up, reglued back together and passed off as LP Studios...
