NGD: 1994 Malmsteen Strat

First series (‘88-‘98) with the small headstock. Scalloped fretboard takes some time getting used to but is a lot of fun for bending and sliding around. Dimarzio pickups sound nice, especially driven. Currently with 10-46 but thinking about 8s or 9s for some guilty pleasure.

Anyone play one of these?

[Slowy]

Happy NGD!

Willow was our scalloped man. I assumed I would hate them but the first time I played one, I discovered I was wrong.

I had a similar scallop experience to Slowy, for some reason they make me play with a much lighter touch so it is less effort to play and I play better as a result.

I've played the later version YJM strat, I really liked it.

Remember seeing him at the Powerstation - prob early 2000’s. A guy I knew was on the desk, said they’d never had to push the Turbosound PA as hard as they did that night.

Some drunk dude also threw beer on him, twice, YJM stopped and threw a tantrum, I recall him saying something like “beer makes the guitar all sticky, and then I can’t play as fast….” before flicking his hair, and launching back into harmonic minor….

Yup I discovered the same, a very light left hand is required.
I think the lighter gauge of string may make sense, just to try.

Never tried a scalloped Strat but I had an SG custom in the early 70's which had been scalloped and it was extremely easy to fly around on. I think the presence of 3 pu's required more playing adaptation than the scalloping .
