WTF? You built your own 3D printer? This is actually more mind blowing than the guitar. (Which is also pretty cool).joshendy89 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 6:30 pmThanks! Yep I built my own 3D printer. I hadn't intended on it but the guitar was just too big to print on my little UP 3D printer so it was a good excuse to make a much bigger printer.

Fucking spammers and their cool guitars, artistic talents and impressive mechanical feats.
<feeling inadequate/>
Edit: Aahh shit, its even worse, now I'm watching the vid on the building of the CNC router used to build the 3D printer.

Re: I 3D printed a guitar that also lights up when played
so how did you build your own 3d printer, and how much?
I've always been keen on building my own 3d router, so it would be similar.
I was a cnc tech in a past life, so its not past me...
unless I turn into Rog.

Re: I 3D printed a guitar that also lights up when played
I used 2020 aluminium extrusion for the frame, can get that stuff quite cheap from right here in NZ. That bolted together in no time. Then there's a lot of custom bits that I used my CNC router to mill out of aluminium sheet. Used my old 3D printer to print a fair few pieces together. All up I think I spent something near $1k, however I had a whole bunch of parts on hand already from unfinished projects.
Got a video with more details on how I built the printer too:

Made a plastic guitar. With the 3D printer you built using the CNC machine you built. Shit man, is anybody else feeling like they have completely wasted their life?
Very impressive man. I shoulda studied harder or something. Really good videos too.

Haha thanks! This stuff isn't as difficult as you'd think. There's so many resources online, build logs of other people making their machines to get ideas from, free plans, open source software. I'm not sure I'd recommend building your own CNC router or 3D printer though, while I love my machines they sure were a gigantic investment of time, money, sanity etc. There's decently cheap off the shelf stuff that would do the trick just fine.

I often get that feeling when I read some CVs! Then again, not many of those I was jealous of even got interviews, and no, not because I was jealous
