NPD: Monarch Saint Mantis

Post by robthemac »

Fresh of Tez's production line. Got it this morning. Looks hot. Sounds good so far.

Haven't had too much time to play around, but I thought I'd do a quick comparison with my Peper's OCD clone and a Hotcake. Pedals played in order of Monarch - OCD - Hotcake. I'll let your ears be the judge, but I certainly think it'll spend a good bit of time on my board.

The three settings used are the suggested ones in the Monarch's user guide. I've tried to set up the OCD and Hotcake to mimic them as much as possible. Guitar is Whitfill T, bridge pickup with tone right up for first two, neck pickup with tone rolled off for the last. Path is OD pedals --> Flint (lil bitta rack 'verb) --> Iridium (Fender Deluxe into 2x10 on the edge of break-up) --> DAW with no post-processing.

First: clean boost (fully clean tone played before each pedal)
Second: heavy crunch
Third: 'woman's voice'

Enjoy!

Not meaning to derail your thread...

I've used a Barber 1/2 Gainer for low / moderate / heavier overdrive for years now and have been very happy with it. It's relatively transparent, and I like having the flexibility of two channels there in the one pedal.

Curious if you or anyone else has tried one and what their thoughts are? I took a punt on this and it's remained my go-to overdrive. That said, I haven't really been trying other OD pedals since finding the Barber because it just works so well with all of my gear.

Haven't tried it. Had one two-stage OD on by board for a while. I found that it only worked with single coils to my ear. I get more versatility from two differently-voiced ODs with a clean boost running before them. Having said that, would be keen to give a Strymon Sunset a jam. Looks super versatile and compact.
