Album of the week

Post by jeremyb »

I tend to discover or rediscover an album and thrash it mercilessly, and the album too if I have time… this week I’ve been playing this on repeat, I’m by no means a Radiohead fan normally, but after watching the from the basement performance of it I was hooked, it’s so fucking good.

What are you all playing on repeat?

Been on a bit of an Anthrax kick lately, courtesy of Scott Ian being interviewed about the hardest Anthrax riffs in a video I saw on YouTube. Mostly Among The Living and Spreading The Disease.

Among the Living is one of my all time favourite albums, all killer and no filler etc.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

This was an epic time for metal, was a huge fan of Anthrax in the 80s, I bought their OIDIVNIKUFESIN concert VHS back then, don't have it any more but its good!

Hah for a slight change of pace, I've had Warpaint's "Radiate Like This" on repeat pretty much since it released.

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list ... sig6DOW4YI

Their sound has changed quite a bit over the years, but I've enjoyed each evolution. This is definitely a very laid back, low key album. Quite a lot less guitar-forward than earlier stuff, though the last couple of albums had been trending that way anyway.

Not very good at putting music feelings into words, but this whole album to me feels like the warmth of settling into a healthy long term relationship. Or maybe the mellow part of a comedown.

I saw Anthrax at the Wellington Town Hall on the Persistence of Time tour. Shihad were supporting, back when they were still a thrash metal band.

I seemed to see Anthrax support Maiden a few times when I lived in London, I really loved Anthrax because they did a cover of Antisocial a song by the first band I ever saw live (Trust)

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic

a while back a friend introduced me to this on vinyl, and I loved it.

Finally managed to get hold of my own copy on Vinyl, last years 50th Anniversary on Splatter and Clear vinyl. So obviously that's had a fair few spins in recent days.

It's an amazing, emotional trippy album, the 10 minute title track is this wailing guitar that was allegedly captured in a single take. Amazing production choices and sound staging make for a very interesting listen on a decent hi-fi or through decent headphones. Not bad for a 1971 album

Has to be his funkiest album, the first track gives you a good idea of where things are at. Pure funk blues gold, and man what a voice he had on him
“𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧”

I can't remember why I didn't go to that one, possibly because I wasn't earning my own coin and didn't have any cash (I must have been 15 or there abouts). Finally saw them with Slayer in Auckland.

No way, I was gonna mention this album too! The song Stevie has quickly become an all time favorite. Really intricate song writing and beautiful harmonies, really gets under your skin.

If y'all can tolerate a bit of country, Kathleen Edwards' Asking for Flowers is a good listen. Try the song 'Hard on Everyone' for a starter. And 'Goodnight, California' for an epic slow ballad. Beautiful stuff.
