Exile is great but I'd probably start with sticky fingers or let it bleed, and ladies and gentlemen for that live stones thing :)

Let it Bleed. The Grrrrr compilation is good, covers most of it. It would give you enough of a taste to decide what to delve further into.

But yeah, Let it Bleed. I find Exile too noisy. But that's me. Sticky Fingers is good.

I also like It's Only Rock n Roll.

Exile, Sticky Fingers and Goats Head Soup from the Mick Taylor residency , Beggars Banquet from before and Let it Bleed ( transitional ). Not to say there's not other good material in their huge catalogue but for me that's when they were firing on all cylinders.

There's an excellent docco out there on the making of Exile, with some awesome footage. When you understand the context behind the album, it makes it all that more special. A classic.

Can't hurt to accompany the listening and doco with a read of Keith Richards' autobiography 'Life'.

I'm going to second Sticky Fingers. But Exile would definitely be my next choice and is a masterpiece.

Another note about Exile, reading the story behind it in Life is well worth the read, plus Happy is probably my favourite Stones song, Keef on vocals, awesome.

Their imperial period was from Let It Bleed to Goat's Head Soup. Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goat's Head Soup.

Exile is a bit tuneless, although the vibe can't be beaten.

Spot on, it's a muddy mix, but the vibe, oh the vibe....
