Bill Withers RIP

Post by werdna »

The brilliant Bill Withers has died. He had a concise but deep catalogue - and timeless hits - Just the Two of Us, Lean on Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Lovely Day. He had a great voice, and was not too shabby on the piano and guitar.

Often you read about recording artists who never doubted that they were destined for stardom, despite the ridiculously long odds. Withers wasn't one of those people. After Withers got a recording contract and was successfully putting out hit records, cautiously he didn't give up his day job - in a factory making toilet seats for aeroplanes. Eventually the factory laid him off. Otherwise he might have stayed until retirement.
In life, don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

That's a great bit of info. I grew up with all his songs around me. They were everywhere. The little hawker stalls outside my primary school, in our cars, department stores, open wet markets, even on little transistor radios hanging off becak frames! I never realised until now how much he featured in my memories.

His career spanned approximately 8-10 years by his count. Possible one of the most genuine and grounded individuals in the music industry, most definitely in Motown/R&B era of 70's/80's. 100% Genuine soul is a sweet thing.
