Action...

Post by Bg »

How do you like your action? I just checked mine on the aria and sx and both are reasonably high. I know I could set lower but if feels pretty comfortable where it is - about 3mm at the 12th fret on the P bass. I'm sure my old MIM P I had set to about 1.5 - 2mm from memory.

Not a bass setup meister yet.... so anyone like it right the way down? Obviously more relief is needed on a bass, but higher action?

And IB:JB - we all know how he likes his action ;)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I hate relief as a general rule so my trusses tend to be cranked.
I’m a 6 string player who owns a bass (as opposed to a bass player) so I have it reasonably low, but not quite low enough to welcome unwanted buzz and clatter.
It sits at a funny point where it’ll tell you when you’re hitting it too hard (great for characterful playing).
I’ll be surprised if it’s 3mm at the 12th.

yeah, you and your relief ;) However those strings wobble quite a bit in the middle so you need more than on a guitar - hence its telling you you're hitting it too hard ;)

thats cool.
I'm pretty much like this with my guitars... I only adjust it when it doesn't feel right.
I don't measure stuff usually, but I think my guitar action is pretty low.
I was just a bit surprised at how high my bass action is :)

I like mine as low as possible.

I pretty much lower it till it buzzes and just a hair up from there.

I have a fairly light touch though

on my bass medium low, I don't like it very low at all, coz I like to slap the strings around the 18th-20th fret need a decent height to get a nice "thump"
I like it when my bass strings "fight back"

If I've got big frets and can tuck under when bending then I set it medium. Otherwise I have to go high. Can't quote the mm, mind.

Bass players need high action cause they've got to have something to keep them involved smashing out root notes during a song.

There’s something about an effortless guitar that’s just a bit meh.
I like one you have to fight with just a little bit. Like you’ve gotta earn its respect first.
