Philip Kubicki - Factor Basses
Damn sexy basses right here, has anyone played one? current price tag is around $3600 USD before custom options begin.
For something that is part of the late 80's design boom, these curves have held up well imo, not to mention the stabby appeal.

Yeah, that is one good lookin' bass.
But my first thought upon seein' it was "Gem and the Holograms".

and whats with the extra 2 frets on the low E? is that an easy drop tuning setup?
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

Re: Philip Kubicki - Factor Basses
Its more like a switchable one-string capo than a dropped tension de-tuning. Some genius design in that instrument, unfortunately the market is still more interested in historical design work than innovation.

Re: Philip Kubicki - Factor Basses
well, let's face it, it's a rip off of dear old Ned's efforts anyway
and Stu Hamm played one so that's real dodgy
the next version was the Key Factor
which had a "headstock"
his fan base is super loyal... cop TalkBass
there was one here in Chch in the early '90s...guy from Area 51, I have forgotten his name sorry.
Kevin Emmett was on Drums though....mean beans.

Well, the bridge is kind of sexy and the knobs look interesting. Not too convinced by the body shape and the "headstick" though.benderissimo wrote:I want some of what you guys have been smoking!

I don't really take much notice of bass players... what's dodgy about Stu Hamm?

I've heard you say that before but good design is timeless. Bad or even average design (like the above IMO) dates real quick.ash wrote:unfortunately the market is still more interested in historical design work than innovation.
I'm all for innovative design but it's got to actually work. The historical designs that are popular are so because they are simple and have mass market appeal. It's pretty hard to beat that. IMHO of course

Re: Philip Kubicki - Factor Basses
It sounds like you're confusing design with styling. Contrary to the beliefs of every teen fashion-school graduate or interior decorator, they aren't the same thing.
Sure the Kubicki is funny looking, but you can be assured they do work very well. Almost every comment you'll read is about how the thing looks, not how it functions. It's really easy to make things that function better than the classic designs, but unless they look right its game over and that can be a real shame.

Re: Philip Kubicki - Factor Basses
What reminded me of this bass was a guitar mag from 1986 (Billy Gibbons Cover ) where it is advertised. I would imagine that it was concieved in the early 80s. Its pretty impressive to be able to break the mould with such a daring design and still be able to market the same product 20+ years later, a lot of designs don't have that luxury. Is that why so many guitars are based off strats and lp's? pretty safe.benderissimo wrote:I've heard you say that before but good design is timeless. I just have to give the guy props for giving an 80's design some longevity. 80's styles were wild... dudes were lookin like lady's n stuff.
