Fair old dredge here, but I have a backing track related question: how easy would it be to make your own? What would you need? Some special equipment? Or is there a program that would do it from an MP3? What sort of source would you need?

What do you mean by 'make your own'?

Record the backing instruments - or - create it from an existing song / track?

I've done a few, and they're usually ok, I prefer someone else to do the drudgery.
My quick way is find a midi file, load into cubase with decent virtual instruments and click start.

My longer way is to do that and then select a set of drum loops that fit.

If I have plenty of time on my hands, I do all that and re record the bass. And any guitars. And keys.

So how long is the string.

other than rockband type releases, I've never found any software that does it succesfully. You could always buy what you need, most things are out there on the karaoke sites if you can't find them via illegitamate ways.

I haven't really thought of anything yet that I want that I can't get off the sites I've seen so far - only just started looking into them - but knowing me I'm bound to find something at some point.

ah, thats when you start doing the midi file, cubase, etc...

You have kids. Forget it... I've spent hours on tracks only to bin them in frustration. d/load them, buy them, make them. that order ;) having said which, if I make them, I change them so they're me...

Ah ok, sweet. I just wasn't sure if there was an easy way to just mute/minimise/strip out the guitar part. Guess not! :)

Not succesfully, they usually end up like shit. But most of the stuff you'll want will have been in guitarherowarplaystationheroesthing so they'll be around without guitar parts?

Yes you've been comparmentalised.

Yeah, you rob whatever frequencies that share the part you are removing, like vocals and guitar. It sounds shit. There's lots of karoake style stuff around though, but yeah, rips from the guitar hero games are good.
