Super LP....

Post by Bg »

Not a superstrat, bored of those... I have an SX LP that has been my messing around with LP - sometimes I get sick of easy high end fret access!
Its got a stetsbar on it already, which is better than a floyd - on an LP anyway.

So EMG's arrived today from Molly, cheers squire, and I managed to find screws that fitted and I bought some connectors, but best of all - I found my EMG Afterburner.

So this Tobacco burst LP (yeah its an SX, but its set neck and its a player) is about to become mental. EMG 81/85, up to 20db of boost on a tone control.... I've been struggling with low output pickups lately for some reason. Trying to play Dio stuff, other than the Donnie I get shit loads of feedback.

Was contemplating a return to BB King territory.

So rewiring this is almost like building an amp.... in a bottle.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Oh. I wondered what you meant when you mentioned that. Never heard of one. Sounds like the LP will be fucking mental! :-)

Bah wiring issues, I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I just assumed it would work first time... Things usually do for me, I'm a technology frightener.

Now I have to delve into the rats nest... I think I'll pull it out (oh-err) and debug out of the guitar.

Can't wait for pics ... I have 2 LP shaped Guitars with trems and they are so much fun. One is hum/hum and the other is a single hum, think I need to do a H/S/S for the true super Str-LP

I think it's usually 81 in the bridge but no reason why you should follow that.

Yeah but I've seen posts recommending tother way round. I can swap easily. Anyway....

Stupid me, searched the parts box, found a ring tip sleeve jack input, didn't look beyond that, it was normally closed when emg want normally open. I'd bought a stereo jack from jaycar on friday which would do the job - but plastic doesn't equal toan! So after judicial sanding of the plastic item, it fits in the hole and all wiring is present and correct!

I should mention that I actually tested stuff with my VALVE oscilloscope, mainly to make sure it was still working after 15 years or so in the dungeon. And it was....

And yes my birds nest of wiring is working :)

So we have an SX LP.... with about 3 or 4 times its worth in upgrades. As I did them myself and all but the stetsbar are 2nd hand... ( I had that on my gibbo at one point)

I've not played it yet other than tuning. The mods are :

Stetsbar 2 bridge/floating trem
EMG 85/81 actives
EMG Afterburner push/pull boost
Bone nut - my own
Jumbo Frets and setup - my own
Dean Markley coated strings....

I'll take better pics when I can get better weather. Sorry for the lack of unboxing video.

Ribaldry aside, it sounds like an interesting build. I've never dicked with active pickups before.
