Must admit on most guitars I am a neck/ middle position guy but this seems pretty shrill even in the middle. I like the pickups fine, but is swapping out my only option?
I had a Squire JM once and tried 1meg/500k and 250k volume pots.
I settled on the 250k in the end and it was a lot more usable for me. But sometimes new pickups are a good option too, for the price of a 250k pot it’s worth a go though.
Putting a resistor across the pot does a similar thing (can lower the value) but it changes the volume taper a lot, never feels as nice if you roll the volume back a lot in your playing style. I’m no expert though, just my 2c.

I would definitely try the resistor mod

Man that Jazzmaster is beeeyooootiful. JM's are still the best looking guitars on the planet IMHO. They don't really work for my style of playing but perfect for the surf stuff.
