An ebony fretboard can be very brittle... I took the greatest care while removing the frets but it still was a dog's breakfast. Took several hours to repair the fretboard with ebony sanding dust and superglue followed by sanding. Worth the effort though :D Here some before and after photos: https:/...

True, remiss of me. I should use epoxy and layer it right across the edge of the board.

Could consider it like clear binding.

Ah, missed your post. That is exactly what I was thinking. Started fretting with 1.2mm high crowns and 2.4mm wide.
