Honestly, the last time I thought about the Bad Monkey at the bottom of the pedal drawer it was to consider lending it to a friend's son. Because I didn't mind if it got a bit wrecked.
I must admit, listing it for a vastly inflated price did cross my mind.

Re: Recommend me a drum machine please
I can second the SDRUM being good. The "strum to program" thing is cool but I never really used it. The upside is it has two big pads, one for a kick and one for a snare. Tap in a rhythm using these and then pick some hats/cymbals to go over the top. Dead simple and it doesn't get in the w...

Re: Kids Guitar advice
Ooh yes, mini amps. They will definitely have easier to limit volume. Maybe I should point him to a Mini cube, or a Blackstar Fly, or Marshall MS2.

Kids Guitar advice
A good mate of mine has a 6-year-old son who is interested in learning the guitar - electric specifically. He knows I play and has asked for advice on gear. They've already got a borrowed 1/2 size nylon-string acoustic. The 6-year-old is a tinkerer, and has already managed to run the $40 cheapo kids...

Re: Marshall lead 20 (has anyone owned one before?)
I've not owned a lead 20, but have a lead 12 which is in the same series. They definitely do a good impression of a bigger 800 when cranked. Apparently it is a feature and not a bug, not sure where it normally kicks in on the gain pot though.

Re: Fender Tonemaster Princeton
I can see the logic in a ToneMaster for people who only want one sound (e.g. DR or Princeton), or who want the sound (and look) of a classic Fender tube amp but without the weight of big transformers and the fickleness of tubes. Or if they have a precious one that they don’t want to gig any more. W...

Re: Fender Tonemaster Princeton
. May I ask what attracted you to a ToneMaster over other modelling options? Honestly, I'm too lazy to learn new things or fiddle with settings. Once I find a good tone for an amp I tend to keep the settings untouched. Having an "old-fashioned combo amp" means I spend more time playing an...

Re: Fender Tonemaster Princeton
If Fender made the Tonemasters more versatile and less expensive, they would not sell many. This is the amp for the man who wants a real Fender amp, without the weight and the valves. He wants it to do what a Fender valve amp does, no more or less; and he wants to pay good money for it. I own a Ton...

Re: Fender Tonemaster Princeton
I'm not sure why they went with the Princeton Reverb next when they already do a lightweight Tone Master Deluxe Reverb with power scaling down to 0.5 watts. To me they already have the portable Blackface combo covered. Yes, the Princeton definitely has a lot of fans, but they could have given the To...

Re: Amp Repair in the lower North Island
There is a vintage radio place in Masterton with a tech who does repairs, but I've not used them before myself. I popped in to look for older TVs and spotted a couple of amps and some PA equipment on the workbench. I asked and was told they do most of the repair work for the local Musicworks as a su...

Re: Old violins sound better, apparently, and why
The violins they measured that did best were old and high quality - 1700s and 1800s. There really aren't many acoustic guitars that would compare to that, not ones in regular use anyway. Guitar mass popularity only took off in the 20th century.

Re: Neck profile on Les Paul Tribute?
It's a bit tricky to know because the Gibson lineup shifts so often. The 2018 tribute I played definitely had a fairly slim neck, and I would expect at 50s standard to be a fair bit chunkier.

Re: Thoughts on ASH + ROSEWOOD strat??
You might find it more difficult to source an Ash body as well. The Swamp Ash mostly used for strat bodies has been over-harvested over the years. Mature trees are hard to come by in the US. That's one of the major reasons that Fender don't use them much now.

Re: Best way to courier/ship a guitar with no case in NZ?
Artist ship their cases in cardboard boxes which, funnily enough, are the perfect size to ship a guitar in. I'm keeping one in the garage just in case. Stick a load of bubblewrap in around it, sorted!
