Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

Absolutely.

The conversion here looks clean and professional. I was initially interested in going back to a standard six screw trem, but I might just get some stamped offset saddles and be done with it.

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

That was my thought, just I have never seen that happen before. From a bit of research, it looks like 78 / 79 bodies have shielding, and a notch cut out next to the cavity for the ground wire. My theory is that a batch of lefty bodies and necks were made in 77, and still sitting around through to 79...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

They sound good so far, but in typical fashion O had it all in peices before I could play with them too much. Something that has me stumped is the cavity. It seems to have a green shielding paint under the finish. I say shielding because it the ground wire screws into it, which has also been finishe...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

ImageThe serial number is an S7 which suggests 77, but the pots and pickups are dated with a 79?

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

Okay, so this arrived today, and this is what I have found out so far. Its heavy at 4.3kg 😅 The neck join is tight The pickups and wiring are all original The finish is surprisingly thin The original trem has been replaced by a 90s Fender two point unit, and the tuners with a random but nice set of ...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

There was a lefty 70 something on TM not too long ago that offered for $2k. The guy had it listed for about a year and I guess someone was interested enough to take the punt. It was a sunburst one and didn't look too bad. I guess that would be me 👋 I didn't know you were lefty. That's cool. Im not ...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

Oh boy, this is not sounding particularly positive. The good news is the bridge and tuning pegs are not original anyway, so those issues are easy fixed. My main concerns are the weight and the neck joint. It is well played, which I see as a good sign. There is a reason those ‘closet classics’ have b...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

Late 1972. Grey bottom pickups, light, tight and resonant. Great neck. Up top '73 will be light and 60's style, and therefore spendy. After that, pot luck, and therefore cheaper. But the pickups post 76 can be really awesome. Hotter and more upper mids. That is truly beautiful. I hope one day to st...

Re: Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

The only one I looked at and played with a view to buying, had a good 2mm gap right around the neck pocket and was as resonant as an ironing board. Good and bad were in all periods though, so if you trip over a good one, then you're laughing. Just make sure you don't buy it sight unseen. ….. well t...

Late 70s Strats - thoughs?

I am well aware of what the internet says about 70s Strats, but I always wonder how much of it is from folks that have played them, vs folks that have regurgitated shit from the back of thier grandmas cupboard. If you have played or owned one, what are your first hand thoughts? And what do you recko...

One of the pedals you took off may have had a buffer, which makes your signal more suitable for traveling through pedals and patch cables.

Re: Diagnose my old hofner bass

We order our pots direct from CTS, and they all come with the date code stamped on them, as what I believe is year (78) day (4) month (7). In saying that, ours are only ever four digit, so those last two numbers may mean something else entirely. That likely dates the bass as any time after that date...
