Re: The Police
I saw them in the 2000s sometime and it was a great show. But while Sting and Copeland were in top shape, I recall Summers seemed to be struggling to keep up. Maybe he was just having a bad night though.

Re: Tube amp techs in Auckland?
This is a solid state amp, right? Might narrow the Auckland field a bit since some amp techs prefer to stick to valve/tube stuff. If you get stuck and can’t find anyone I might be able to walk you through a few tests you can do yourself. Might end up being something you can handle on your own with a...

Re: Electrical Audio's Garnet B.T.O.
Garnet was a product of my hometown! Growing up, I used to see lots of them in the pawnshops since players preferred Fender, Marshall, Mesa, etc. It’s a real shame cause Gar Gilies was doing crazy stuff with amps that other builders still haven’t picked up on. I have his amp book, which is a random ...

Re: Looper…is it worth spending up ?
I have a Jamman Solo XT and it’s packed with features including just about everything you mention: stereo in/outs for splitting signals, switching banks on the fly (using external switches), quantisation, aux-in and a micro-sd which you can (apparently) pre-load with samples. I can’t comment on sign...

Did you hear a big difference after changing the screen resistors? It should make a big difference to the operating state of the EL84s but I’m curious to know how it sounded.

Re: Where to get components locally
Never heard of Techexpress before. They say theyre based in Palmy North but they don’t give a physical address so it’s probably a reseller. Suntan brand is what jaycar and other retail electronics shops sell. They’re nothing special but they’ll do the job. And I’m still happy to post you any of the ...

Re: Where to get components locally
I should have a .68uf in my stash but not sure about volatges. Can dig around when I get back tomorrow. They’re no longer useful for small orders, but RS components used to keep NZ stock although that seems to have changed post-covid. They definitely hold some stock in Australia so shipping can be 2...

Re: Redplating el84
That looks like a resistor to pin 3, which would make it a cathode bias resistor. Looks like it was working hard to do its job. You don’t have to replace it and since the amp seems to have individual biasing you can just pop in another valve. Just to be safe, I’d try one of the other old valves in t...

Re: Gibson Falcon amps
That video is total bs. If pcbs and pcb-mounted valve sockets are such a problem, why has mesa boogie (and Fender) been using this design in their amps for decades? And people pay good money for them! I don’t think board-mounted sockets are a good idea for boutique amps, but there’s nothing wrong wi...

Re: Questions for the amp/pedal building geeks re: Caps
I’ve heard that ESR increases with voltage rating on caps, so the trick is to get ones that have a rating higher than they’ll see in the circuit, but not excessively higher. So avoid using 400v 22uf caps in situations where they’d only see 5-10v (like cathode bypass caps in tube amps). But in your c...

Re: (lost in) space echo - now with demo
Volume is not related to impedance - it’s related to AC voltage. Impedance is basically resistance, but for AC. Longer cables create more series impedance. When that series impedance ends at a parallel impedance (the speaker), you get a voltage divider. A higher series impedance makes for more atten...

Re: Questions for the amp/pedal building geeks re: Caps
Are you replacing all the caps or just the electrolytics? Hopefully the latter! Low ESR is only a consideration for power supply caps, where you want to filter out all hum n buzz. Usually vintage power supplies that are under-flitered (few caps or low uf values) benefit from most from low esr caps. ...
