Re: What's on your work bench?

70? At 45 now. Plenty of hours gone into F holes and body binding (routing, bending and gluing). So much quicker to just make a solid body without binding anything. 45 hrs is pretty good going. Are you organised enough that you don't spend 1/2 your time looking for tools, parts etc in your workshop...

Re: What's on your work bench?

I've put a lot of time into F holes in my time too. Did you bind the bodies as well? I wish I'd thought to at the time!! Did some reading on F holes and how they came to be. Very interesting. http://www.openculture.com/2016/01/why-violins-have-f-holes-the-science-history-of-a-remarkable-renaissance...

Re: What's on your work bench?

Neck will be Kohekohe. Wow, that is different. I was under the impression its a nightmare to work with. Its scientific name even eludes to it! Dysoxylum (bad wood). Not the case? One day I want to have a guitar crafted for me made entirely out of native timber. You ever build with rewarewa? Kohekoh...

Re: What's on your work bench?

Ta, binding the F holes was a phecking pain. I use a soldering iron for heating the binding as the diameter is so small. I think I need a light colour as all the binding is ebony, so not sure if brownish would do it... I have kept a log of the hours gone into this. Care for any guesses up to this st...

Just to give the AF sufferers some positive news... MiL will turn 88 next month and has been living with AF for a very long time. Yes, there were a couple of very scary moments but she is still going strong.

Re: What's on your work bench?

Finally got this in the house, Covid sure has slowed mail from the USA. Most of the back braces are loose, easy fix. The neck is hanging on by a tiny bit of glue so can probably get that off without steam, a reset is definitely needed. Graphics are really great and overall for a mid sixties guitar ...

Re: What's on your work bench?

Sweet. Whats the neck made from?? Looking forward to seeing that fretboard! Got pics of the finished body?? Neck will be Kohekohe. This is the current state of the body - see photo. Need to cut out the neck rebate, then lots of sanding as well as rounding the bindings. It has a trestle structure in...

I get the feeling that every word in every post by Slowy is deliberately chosen. Leave one word out, or change one for its synonym, and you have just lost the essence of his message. The man should be a writer

Nothing too dramatic I hope!! Health insurance? I’m not insurable as I have previous conditions. I got off lightly really (coronary artery disease) so feeling pretty grateful. I could have waited for public system...but I’m on the inside and know how long these things take. Not worth waiting when i...

That's cool! I like the asymmetry. Nice design! :)
.
I looked at so many headstocks and in the end decided to bastardise the Gretsch Corvette one to a 3x3. And yes, it is totally asymmetrical, angles, curves, etc

Re: What's on your work bench?

Today I created first a soft template, then a hard template, then a test headstock... Drilled the 10mm holes in about 6 steps and inserted the tuners. It is going to work :D (even the D string tuner will freely turn). http://www.thesupposedstringmeister.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Headstock-Templ...
