Re: The Gibson Les Paul Model thread

I have had a fair few Les Paul guitars since the 1980s, including a custom shop one. The best one by far is my current one. A humble 1990s Studio model with an ebony fingerboard. Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF in the neck. I do not know why, but it just sou...

Re: Gear Quests!

Best gear quest I had was when I was 16 in 1986 and had been working construction for a few months. Trying a few dozen acoustic guitars. Yep, the story about the 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo I have mentioned a few times -- and how I stupidly traded it in for a bunch of near worthless electric guitar s...

Re: NGD time for a reveal

It has the proper looking old school rosewood. Nice. Dark and a kind of gnarly grain. I do not like that pale brown looking rosewood so many guitars have these days. Kind of baby poop colour. The proper Brazilian stuff is endangered though. Rain forests and all that. Oh well. My favourite guitar to ...

Re: YouTube goodness

Reinforcing my belief that speaker, preamp and then power section are the most influential elements of an amp. Also reinforcing how good that 100W Jensen Blackbird sounds. https://youtu.be/XV0HlT6Q8GM?si=d9yAa7VqNGO564_w Which makes sense to me as a speaker has its own EQ curve (frequency response)...

Re: YouTube goodness

This is one of my favourite lead guitar tones of all time. It just freaking rips. Rory was badass.

Re: Free DAW plugins

Softube are offering a free VCA compressor. It requires an account and iLok though, but that a lot easier than it used to be.

Re: Guitar food groups and must try guitar sounds

Middle position on a Les Paul that has coil splits. Run the bridge pup as a humbucker for bite and the neck one split for clarity and fullness. Blend volume and tone controls to taste. Some cool tones can be had.

Re: My Marshall JMP 1987 clone. Sound clip. The Unchained Riff (of course).

I bought a JJ 12AX7S because the short plate design is supposed to have very low microphonics and noise. Nope. The trusty old Shuguang 12AX7Bs in there are much less noisy, less microphonic, and sound nicer too. Still my favourite modern production ECC83 valve. Too bad the factory burned down. Supp...

Could always refin the whole thing in a more exciting colour. Sunburst is for boomers. :sarc:
It's for Gen X too. Sad the younger gens often have such bad taste. Oh well. :P

Re: My very own gibson shocker

I little bit of work by a suitably qualified pro and that thing would be playing a treat. It's gorgeous. P.S. Them breaking just comes with the territory. Mahogany territory. I've been lucky with Gibson since the '80s, but the one Les Paul I gave to my nephew broke the day he graduated school and pi...

You're speaking my language with that tone. Sounds great! Cheers. It's getting there. It's partly down to how the lad is playing the riff. He's got the thing we need to sound good. The thing some players just have and others like me have to work hard to get. Lucky him. I am thinking of ordering one...

Re: My Marshall JMP 1987 clone. Sound clip. The Unchained Riff (of course).

That sounds killa Cheers. A guy over the north shore built it. I can not remember his name. He builds lots of Marshall style amps. He said the amp was going for the Live At The Apollo tone. AC/DC I presume, because it sounded like Malcolm's JTM45 to me, with a bit of Angus' Plexi mixed in. He did n...
