Re: Boss Nextone
I'd definitely like to try one out. Curious to see how the Nextone stacks up against the Katana. By the looks of it I'll probably still prefer the Katana style presets + lots of effects, but this is interesting.

Re: Boss Nextone
How many "It's 99% of the way to tube toan" comments are there on youtube about this?

Well it is just bloody awful comedy strat tones in that clip, so not sure which tube amp it's 99% of.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Re: Boss Nextone
Wasn’t anything there that overly wowed me. If I was going get a non-valve amp the ones that would be in the running for my cash would be...
Roland JC120 (à la Steve Rothery)
Lab Series (à la BB King and Clapton)
Yellow Rock
For me, Boss seem to be making great stuff but their amps are evolving and improving so quickly they’re almost redundant a few years after you buy one. Kinda like Apple iPhones. I’m more interested in something that can stand the test of time.

Re: Boss Nextone
Wonder if a firmware update on the Katana would get you close to this? They look very similar.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:Wasn’t anything there that overly wowed me. If I was going get a non-valve amp the ones that would be in the running for my cash would be...

Re: Boss Nextone
well technically are iphones redundant when they release the next version? from my experience no they aren't. Each new model seems to be exactly the same as the previous one with a few tiny little things that make the apple whores pay big $$ for the new one but fundamentally the phone is the same.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:

Now I haven't really watched the video for the nextone so not sure "what" it is aiming for but I assume its a more less tricks, less gain thing (?)...so not one upping the Katana. The Katana artist was a response to the complaints about the dials being on top wasn't it...so they made one more like tradition combo with a few "updates" that don't sound any different from the original Kats
If Less is More Then Just Think How Much More More would be

Re: Boss Nextone
I get your point. Tube amps *seem* like something to hold on to for the long term, even if many of them get outdated too. Amps don't sound worse if a new version comes out though, we just often want the latest thing.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote: For me, Boss seem to be making great stuff but their amps are evolving and improving so quickly they’re almost redundant a few years after you buy one. I think this Nextone has a different vibe to the Katana, and seems to be directed to a different type of player. I don't think I'd buy one, but I'd try one out for sure.

Re: Boss Nextone
One of the things I didn't like about the Katana was its cheap feel. The Blues Cube was quite classy by comparison. If they take this new amp and put if in a fancy Tolex, marine birch ply box and double the price (preferably assembling in small numbers out of Butt-Fuck, Alabama) I'll definitely deign to try one. But if they're just going to make a great sounding amp at an affordable price again, well they can stick it up their bottom.

To me this means “something that requires minimal upkeep for ~20 years of operation”.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:[...] I’m more interested in something that can stand the test of time.

For me it's more the technology aspect of things - how quickly is it going to be superseded? What's the software like? Then other things like stability, ease of use, quality etc.Single coil wrote:To me this means “something that requires minimal upkeep for ~20 years of operation”.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:[...] I’m more interested in something that can stand the test of time.
Upkeep I'm not so fussed on, I half expect that in some way or another with a good valve amp.
