Best speaker upgrade for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe?
Have been asked by a friend who is Upgrading 2 Hot Rod Deluxes and wants my suggestion on the best upgrade for the speakers.
I don’t know the amps well enough to know what works but he wants both amps matching perfectly for an exact stereo setup for studio recording.
He likes big headroom type clean sounds.
What would you reccomend?

Following with interest, as I’m after a speaker to go in a 1x12 with my new Princeton head.

Depends what kind of sound you are going for. If you want it to sound more vintage, try a Jansen. If you want more presence, try a Celestion Blue, more blues/rock try a Greenback...etc.

My friend likes big Fender type cleans, so a speaker to help with that I guess.olegmcnoleg wrote:Depends what kind of sound you are going for. If you want it to sound more vintage, try a Jansen. If you want more presence, try a Celestion Blue, more blues/rock try a Greenback...etc.
I read the Vintage 30 actually works pretty well in these amps, anyone have experience?

From what I've heard, something like the JBL would be perfect for those high headroom clean sounds

A long way from my favourite amp but a bandmate had one with a Vintage 30. He played a Strat and predominantly Les Paul through it and produced juicy blues/rock tones.Reg18 wrote:My friend likes big Fender type cleans, so a speaker to help with that I guess.olegmcnoleg wrote:Depends what kind of sound you are going for. I'd say the Vintage 30 gave the amp a healthy seasoning of Marshall so it might not be what your friend is looking for.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Do you want to try my Blue? It is 16 ohm though.Conway wrote:Following with interest, as I’m after a speaker to go in a 1x12 with my new Princeton head.

Re: Best speaker upgrade for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe?
Those amps have a bit more midrange than say a blackface twin or deluxe reverb, so is gonfor something a bit more scooped and classic voices.
Jensen C12N is a good choice for classic scooped fender cleans. Can get them from Thomann among other places.
A JBL E120 would be ok but you’d probably want to find one with a paper dust cap. I have a vintage D120F which is awesome but heavy.
Weber Californias have a great rep too. Again- paper dust cap. I haven’t tried them but would love to.
One of those three is what I would go for. All good options

Also- I like Eminence Lil Texas as well, but they’re not great at gigging volumes. Shame, because they’re super light.
I have a Jensen Neo 100 and a Weber Neomag that are both pretty cool too.

Yup. So many of the guitar speakers (in my experience) are in the crunchy and colored side of things. Think the Greenback, the Celestion Blue and the Jensen Alnico paper cone things. I think the best speaker for big cleans is rather something more modern and high tech with big power handling, almost a speaker made for HiFi or live sound reproduction rather that a guitar speaker.
