I always thought that Van Halen came out of nowhere. I could not hear in his playing anything of Hendrix, Page or Clapton. But tonight after listening to some Tommy Bolin, it is clear that EVH turned up via him. You can hear it so clearly in EVH's phrasing, chops, effects. Van H just takes it a little further and does it better. Bloody interesting.

I've been listening to TB for years but would never have spied a connection in EVH's playing. Don't know about EVH doing TB 'better' per se. He had his very own thing for sure but might've struggled to ape TB's Billy Cobham stuff.

Will dig out some when I get home and see if I can hear any similarities too.
