Cheap pedals for TOOL

Post by MakoGat »

Im after a couple cheap ($50-$80) pedals to get close to Tool's Adam Jones basic sound. Using amps distortion Im wanting....

Digital Delay, he uses BOSS DD-3 - anybody use or comment on..
Joyo JF-08 Classic Delay?

Flanger, he uses BOSS BF-2 - anybody use or comment on...
Joyo JF-07 Classic Flanger

DD-3 is a digital delay dude, are you thinking of the DM-3?

I'm sure that'll be fine for both. they're so cheap they'll be just fine until you're ready to upgrade.

I just fugured for the price of the two Boss pedals i could have 8 Joyos and in a live situation most punters wouldnt even notice. Reviews on Joyo pedals say good enough for the job and quite rugged.

Had a couple joyos. Fuckin jumped on them and all sorts and couldn't break them, so the switches are good lol.
You'll probably have luck with a boss power stack - seems to do all sorts of gain sounds. Starts at mild grit and just keeps going into a compressed mess at the other end. Tool will be somewhere in the upper middle of the gain control.

Had aJoyo D-seed delay. While it was cool and had a lot of features, it wasn't true bypass and it tone sucked hardcore so it had to go.
Not sure if the delay you are talking about is true bypass or not. Sometimes they claim to be but aren't.

Using an early 90's Peavey Bandit, figured my Les Paul into flanger, use the amps distortion with the delay in the Fx loop and see how that goes. I do have some random pedal that will do variuos distortion if the amps aint right.

Try putting only dirt pedals into the guitar input. Put flange >> delay through effects loop and report findings.
Remember, buffers don't suck tone. Bad input impedance sucks tone.

Yeah thats where the flanger should usually go put according to THE TUBE he has his flanger in front, goes something like volume pedal, wah, flanger, E.Q (among many others) into Marshall and Diesel amps, then delays etc in Fx loop.

I will try both methods and report back haha

Flanger in the effects loop will make it way more pronounced, which you may or may not enjoy

Ive seen that one, they use the DD-3 and an EQ ONLY through Marshall with Epi L.P. Not sure they quite nailed the sound but not bad for cheap.
Theres also this one here but I dont like the guitar hes using to try getting the sound https://youtu.be/_nyVR9god1A

I have the Joyo JF-08 digital delay on its way, next week getting the Joyo JF-08 classic flanger and make a start with those. Ill keep an eye out for a cheap or second hand EQ.
