John Suhr lives across the street, but one, from God.
And he'll tell you straight that nitro doesn't add tone.

Agree with this, but I think that 1/4 inch of woodgrain filler, undercoat and varnish can suck tone

Probably wasn't a good idea to use all that car filler on my early refinish jobs.

I'd say no more than any other boo-teek builder. $4k or more does seem a lot for two pieces of wood bolted together. But if that's what you are gassing for, I'd say you are in good company round here :D

I'd happily make a Suhr my next guitar but I've never played one.

My recent Nocaster was definitely better than the one I've replaced it with but I can't quantify by how much. The new owner told me he loves it too. At least he's putting it to work: http://thegunsmiths.co.nz/

Better is better but there is that law of diminishing returns I guess. You need to be happy to have all that cash tied up in one guitar.

As soon as the right one shows up I'm in amongst them. But I don't want sunburst, black, modern or relic so thats 87.23% of the second hand market gone...A nice yellow HSS would be the business in Classic Pro...

I've got three Suhrs. A modern custom, an S3 and a heavy reliced strat. I also have two Tom Andersons. The Suhrs and TAs are very comparable in quality. The five of them together hands down eat anything else I've owned (or own). And that includes vintage Gibsons, EBMM, PRS and although my recently acquired Fender Custom Shop tele gets close, its still only close and not better.

Honestly you have to play them to get it. Obviously for many the extra cost (and it is a lot extra) is not going to be worth it from a diminishing returns perspective. But if I had to ditch every guitar I had but two, one of those would be a Suhr. (The other would be my '91 Gibson that I've owned since new and have far too much history and memories attached to it for it to ever be sold).
