What's your favourite overdrive pedal, and why?

Post by Molly »

My vote goes to J.Rockett Audio Designs' The Dude. Will do everything from great clean boost (huge boost!) through to far heavier than you might reasonably need. And all with great dynamic response.

Proco Rat (though I suppose it's probably a 'distortion' pedal). Classic, thick and heavy, doesn't turn into mush.

Tubescreamer with Marshall style amps. Cos mids. (Keeley modded TS9/808 in particular).
G2D Cream Tone for the mid to low gain style amps.

Fulltone OCD V1 and Xotic AC Booster, been on my board for since they were first produced! 9 or 10 years ago I think, so far haven't played another OD that can knock those off my board. Very responsive to how hard/light I play

Silverpistol Bronson for big overdrive, because it's better than all the other pedals.

Silverpistol judge for pushing any amp into pushed drive.

Stacking them for solo goodness is the way forward. If you haven't tried them, you've missed out on the good stuff!

Digitech Hardwire SC-2

I've had all sorts between my Tele and Deluxe Clone and the SC-2 just seems to be the most versatile and non tone sucking I've used.

I'm quite amazed really!

Currently it's the venerable Tim. Turns out a cranked Matchless Lightning is my preferred OD sound at the moment, so the first stage to get a bit of hair going, and the boost for lead or grunt. It hated other Vox-esque EL84s but goes really well on the Matchless.

J.Rockett Audio Designs Archer Gold. Characterful mid boost that pleases my ears.

Well I've had a few OD's, treble boosters etc, but the best one of the lot was the Joyo Sweet Baby  was just brilliant (apart from the typically noisy joyo footswitch) and for $55 you can't lose!

Hotcake is my favourite. There's a smoothness I love, but when you find the sweet spot with the AC30, it retains enough bite to cut through bands/mix's very well. When you get to turn the amp up loudish, the mixture of the pedal gain and amp compressing really is something.
Second would be the Keeley 808, which recently overtook the Cusack Screamer on the basis that the bottom end in the 808 is slightly 'tighter' (oh, er..) and more defined to my ears. That aside, it just has all the right things in all the right places.

MXR FET driver. Because it's hairy, has a wide range of ragged hairyness available without sounding compressed, and likes to get kicked in the face with a treble booster.

It's not for everyone though. Wouldn't recommend it. EQ is weird. I usually have the treble and bass about 2.
