Retro Pickups
Assistance please... I have a 335-style project on the go, creating a rockabilly player with a twangy vintage sound.
What are some pickup options and where do I source in NZ?
I have had GFS Retrotrons recommended, are these readily available in NZ?
Sorry, not very gear savvy here, please be patient .
Many thanks...

Re: Retro Pickups
You buy them direct from www.guitarfetish.com I put some of the GFS liverpools in the Gretsch I had and they were brilliant, probably not twangy enough for what you want, but they have a bunch of other options
Supposedly, We Were Nightmares.

Re: Retro Pickups
Lots of options out there. Personally, I'd go for TV Jones if you can stretch it. You have to buy them direct and they're spendy, but worth every cent. I've tried one set of GFS filtertron style pickups and they didn't really sizzle my bacon.

There can only be one....
Mebbe you're right, but I ain't gonna change it now, sorry. I've used that title in various music projects for over 15 years now. There'll be over 50 gats, basses and drum kits floating around NZ with custom paint jobs by The Bald Man.

You could also check out a set of Rickenbacker Toaster Pickups if you're interested in bright twang. Probably a little different to the Gretsch vibe

Re: Retro Pickups
Not any more. I moved on from my job that gave me access to a spray booth so have had to give up any projects that involve spraying or solvents. I still do a few projects on the side for 'fun', but these are either hand-finished or promo-type artwork with vinyl, etc.

Re: Retro Pickups
Oooh. Just noticed a TV Jones neck PU on TradeMe.
Still.. I think I'd prefer something with a bit more output... a set of GFS Retrotron Series Memphis Alnico 2 are on the way to try. At that price ya can't go wrong..!

That TV Jones is probably the wrong size. It's also a HiLo Tron which is definitely not everyone's cup of tea (but I love them). The Bald Man wrote:Oooh. Just noticed a TV Jones neck PU on TradeMe.

Re: Retro Pickups
The GFS stuff is brilliant for the money, even great at twice the price, no cork sniffery but just a great quality product!

That's nice. I've had extremely mixed experiences with them myself.jeremyb wrote:The GFS stuff is brilliant for the money, even great at twice the price, no cork sniffery but just a great quality product!
