I think it started with electronics and computer gear when locally-based online stores started competing directly with international stores. It's been a thing in computer hardware for a few years at least - since nearly everything is bought online anyway.

yeah mines 100w.I ran mine on.5w at home and loved it.Took it to practice and BLEEEHHHGGGG.open back cab syndrome. I dont want to ruin its near new condition by installing one of my agricultural work-arounds. Never trust a tradesman with missing fingers.

Might bite the bullet on a katana - 50W for $380 is hard to say no to.

I was probably leaning toward the 50 over the 100 anyway, but it's a bit disappointing that the 100W 12x1 combo's seem to have sold out online just in time for the sale :|
