I have my speedy bits here and there but I'm more from the Gary Moore (older) school whereby I'd work out a sequence / pattern around a scale and practice the crap out of it (think 'Out in the Fields' solo climbing run). The incredibly fluid, seemingly 'drifting' across the fretboard stuff that Tom Quayle does (based on the little bit of YouTube I just watched) found popularity after I'd already become set in my ways.
