Fuzz or OD for shoegazey sound

Post by Shimmer »

As someone on a budget I am tossing up between a single pedal for OD/Distortion/Fuzz. I have read that for a big wall of shoegaze-y sound, a reverb followed by a muff is the option, however some people say that it just turns into mush, and a Rat instead of aa Muff would give more clarity. I love the jet engine sound of cherub rock era pumpkins, hence the big muff thought, - but if it'll sound mushy for reverb laden noise, then I would go another direction. I also love that magic sound at the end of Slowdive's Catch the Breeze (they apparently used Rats and a Boss OD2?).

Anyway, thoughts and suggestions would be more than welcome.
I want all the pedals!

This is totally self serving but have a look at the EHX Holy Stain. It has adjustable Fuzz/OD that feeds into reverb

If you want pumpkins sound the musket is awesome for that (4m58s), but then the fuzz god I have can do it well too (start of video)...

In the 90s Slowdive, and a lot of similar bands, used the Pro Co RAT.

EDIT: I see you already mention this in the OP.

Get a Yamaha FX-500 if you like the "Catch the Breeze" sound. That's where a lot of their distinctive sound comes from.

the HM2 was also used by a few bands as well,My Bloody Valentine being one of them.
you can pick up a behringer clone for 25-50 bucks.

Thanks Kris & sunburster. My younger brother used to have an HM2 but gave it away!.
I guess I don't want to mimic those bands exactly, but more interested in people's experience as to whether a fuzz will turn to mush when used that way.
The Yamaha would be great fun though - that sound they get is gorgeous.

i think if you kept the gain quite low it would work-i use delay and verb pre gain a lot but its more to get a self-oscillating type of effect. But more controllable than a runaway delay if you get my drift.Only way to know is try for yourself i guess.

I'm the opposite, high gain before layers of delays and reverbs, big wall of sound :)

If you'd like, I can send you a Silverpistol Sirius Fuzz to have go on. I think it'll be right in your wheel house.

Thanks for the offer - your pedals look fantastic, but I'm currently down the low, low end pricewise.

I should have read the first 5 words of your post

I would recommend a Rat in your case - and I would recommend two simple mods.

One is the ruetz mod on a switch. The ruetz mod basically gives you more bass and lower gain, making it a great overdrive.
Two is a three way slipping switch, Silicon (stock)/off (boost) / leds (turbo rat). Stock setting gives you greasy fuzz past 12 on the dial, nothing gives you lots of volume and decent boost, and the LED's give you lots of crunch.

I think that for what you're after and your budget, it'll hit the sweet spot of low price + versatility.
