Chasing my tail.
I have a THD 2x12 cab. It cost me a fortune and it really is a fine piece of work; clarity, punch and power handling in a portable package. It's been used mostly as a bedside table since I sold the Marshall but I always knew I'd get another head for it sometime.
Enter the Optimus Prime amp. An amazing piece of work purchased for a price that gives me the guilts, a brilliant match for the THD and the best match ever for my Korinacaster
Except it makes my ears bleed.
So I bought Nik's Fane Blue in the hope of taming it.
And now I have a THD 2x12 as a bedside table.......

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Can you mic it up and post a sample clip bashing out some big open crunch chords or something

attenuator
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Re: Chasing my tail.
I get to blast it all the time. And it sounds fantastic cranked. I went to bed last night and realised my ears were aching. This is probably not a sustainable course of action.JHorner wrote:Do you never get a chance to blast it at volume? If so, that seems like the problem to solve.
Also, I play in a loud sweaty rock band and this rig is still too much.

What do you think I am, tech capable or something?Aquila Rossa wrote:Can you mic it up and post a sample clip bashing out some big open crunch chords or something

Having that exact issue with a Hiwatt Custom 100 resulted in significant hearing loss for my brother and is also why I don't play through my Greenstone pretty much at all these days.Slowy wrote:I get to blast it all the time. The problem with an amp that improves so much with volume is you just keep knocking it up another 1/2 notch as your hearing desensitises. Then you stop playing and the ringing and hearing loss becomes obvious, some of which will be permanent. It is not a sustainable course of action, you will go deaf.
Either keep your incredibly rock 'n' roll bedside table or sell it.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

I think thats the point. He loves this Rig and doesn't have/want another oneJHorner wrote: When not need to be loud, use other rig.
chasing tail is certainly the correct term, but don't feel bad Slowy you are just in a place that most guitarist have been in for decades...it is why they invented the master volume.
in reality no amp will ever get that cranked amp tone at ear friendly levels but there are a lot that do get fantastic tonez a low volume, it's just that its a "different" great tone
only advice I can offer is get away from the cone of the speakers
If Less is More Then Just Think How Much More More would be

Re: Chasing my tail.
Not sure if this helps or not.
Just bought myself a Reactive Load box, and man what an awesome piece of gear. Makes my amp sound so beautiful through headphones or monitors. And IR cabinet selection can change the tone in different ways. (Wouldn't be hard to get the cab simulation to sound like your one). Add a little convolution reverb and it will sound as though you are playing your amp, cranked, in a real space.
But getting that tone live is a hard one, you need the volume obviously. But there is a way to use the load box live if you wanted to go down that route.
