That's some brave drilling in the top part. It's got a very DIY feel to it.

Yeah it is - you can tell by the in/output jacks which are high up the sides of the enclosure (V2). The next version (V3?) had the jacks in the middle of each side - and is tidier inside with less wire and more circuit board/solder.
I have a V2 Crunchbox now and internally it's completely different to the V3 Crunchbox I had:

I had one of those. Caused a bit of an envelope filter type effect on the start of each note in that the attack of each note was slightly clipped and the note took a moment to reach full volume. Not an issue with slow playing, but playing some quicker runs the notes would disappear.
Everyone else I have met with one of these hasn't had that problem so maybe mine was faulty? Long gone on tardme now, so too late to find out.

I thought I'd add to this; I just got an old version like this too.
My word, it's bloody amazing!
I had no idea it'd be this good.

Yeah, they're really nice all right. I really like the thick, goopy mid-range texture they (seem to) add. I've always found TS pedals too nasal for my tastes but these are something else. The only thing I don't like about them (and TS pedals in general) is that when used with really low gain settings for just a little bit of hairy clean tone, I really miss the bottom end that they hack off. That's what makes them rad once you're pushing them (or using one to push your amp) though.
