I reckon Tube bass amps are the best at doing this, but most bassists I know can't afford those shenanigans, so revert to some sort of pedal.
(Tony's old Orange AD200 was the tits. God I'd love the bassist in my band to have one of those.)
A little bit of grit on everything seems to help.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

Bassist in my band has an Ampeg Scrambler. That thing is a beast.

Lemmy had the right idea
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

So my question is, assuming that the finger is pointing to the Sadowsky DI/Pedal, what does this pedal do for you? why do you like it's sound and what purpose is it serving if you're still using the amps front end? A total guess would be you're using it as a buffer or something similar and maybe getting some nice colourisation you're liking, perhaps you could replace it with a straightforward buffer that works at the right level and does any of the impedance matching you need.

I guess the Yang to that questions Ying is: what is it that you like/need from your Amps pre-amp/input circuits and could you possibly find something to put in your signal chain to get that tone/feel and then go direct into the Fx Return?
I use it as a "sub" enhancement
Like super low end

They are also for the shit for live performance with a Jazz Bass.

Going to run a couple of Jazz Basses into the Sadowsky - Power Amp - PA Speakers this afternoon given how crap this Chch weather is.

After playing through Tony's Orange a couple of times I was going to buy one but got an unpassable deal on an Ashdown CTM-300

No

I'm best guessing that
- the Sadowsky is too 'hot'
- the Amp input doesn't like variable power pedals (ie: not all are 9v)
- there is a variation in what the Amp input and the Amps effects loop can tolerate.

I'm guessing the rest of the pedals work if you remove the Sadowsky from the chain?

No , the Diamond Compressor won't turn on when I get to 6 pedals in the chain.

I have no idea why something would switch on in the effects loop but not in the amp input but I'm like very uneducated in anything electrical.

I've reduced down to this

Bass into Pitch-black > 3Leaf Proton > Boss PBEQ > Boss BF2> EBS Filter > Dunlop Bass Wah > Tech 21 Chorus > Wounded Paw Fuxx > out to Amp

Band practice tonight run it through the 300Watt valve head from the front.
Fingers crossed.

Well it works
But I miss both the Diamond and Sadowsky

I assume it's possible to have one board in
And another board through the effects loop
