hmmm, just an observation, but aren't you the guy that rolls his eyes and starts shaking if an amp has more that 9 knobs? I kinda think that it would be a good way to hone your amp choices and get the sound you search for though. Would save all that buying and selling amps but you might just be an uncomplicated type of player, especially as you're not into effects. But then you'd lose the thrill of unpacking new gear, (and repacking it again!).

So do it, if you're prepared to spend the time fiddling to get the most out of it.

Kempers are fiddly things. There is a learning curve and a lot of buttons and knobs. And the amps sound like they do on recordings, not how they would sound in 'your' room. So they lose some of that 'immediate' sound that a good amp has. But they sure sound good through headphones as a result. Note, I'm sure more advanced Kemper users could help minimise this issue. It is only a small thing, and the quality and sheer volume of fantastic amp tones makes up for it.
This is true. The sound is different, but not a bad different. You do get used to it; it still sounds great. Just as importantly, it still feels great. The volume roll back on a guitar works just as it should. I can happily sit on a JCM800 patch and I'm just rolling my guitars volume around to get from clean to filthy. Once you got it set right you will hardly touch it.

Whats the problem being solved by the Kemper? Just amp variety, convenience or volume? If volume, tried the IR path with real amp yet? (you have/have had/will have some nice amps)

Just gone back Kemper.. solves so many issues - So easy for recording demos @ home, Plug n and play @ home without setting up my amp and pedals.
Will probz eventually end up using as my liver rig too. So many options for tone and it sounds so so great. Sure it takes time to bond with and understand what all the knobs do but once you get acquainted you wont look back

you don't have to twiddle knobs all day if you dont want to... just scroll thru the amps and pick one
they're very programme dependent... of all the thousands of profiles available i have about 12 amps in my favourites and that's all i use
i have mine plumbed into a studio set up..if i were you i'd get some half decent active studio monitors .. i dont know much about these special speaker systems sorry

Thanks for the replies. This is the present Andertons price:

So, that's about $3,750 plus GST. About as cheap as it's going to get?

That's a big investment right there.

Wait for a second hand one, you'll take a big hit on resale if it doesn't work out, plus if you have to wait for one to come up you'll have more time to really think it through :)

^This is what I was implying. Sounds like you're on the fence Molly.

Well, I would ideally like to give one a go first but maybe the outcome of that would depend on the profiles etc.

Saying tho
You could just buy the unpowered and run through a loop or a magnum 44 power amp
Plus you don’t need a foot controller for garage noodling
Get the meat
Buy the veg later
